Privacy Policy
Meals helps you save recipes, plan meals and shop with your household. This policy explains what information we collect, why, who helps us process it, how long we keep it, and the choices you have. Meals is operated by emarcondes LLC (“emarcondes”, “we”, “us”) and is offered in the United States.
The short version: we collect what it takes to run your account and share your plans with your household. We don't sell or share your personal information for advertising, show ads, or track you across other companies' apps and websites.
What we collect
Account information
You sign in with Apple. Apple gives us a unique identifier for your account and, if you choose to share them, your name and email address (which may be a private relay address from Apple). We use these to sign you in, show your name to members of your household, and reply when you contact us. We also keep the token Apple issues at sign-in so we can revoke your Sign in with Apple connection if you delete your account.
Your content
The meals, recipes, photos, weekly plans, grocery lists, tags and settings you create are stored on our servers so they can sync across your devices and with your household. They are also saved on your device so Meals works offline.
Recipe imports and photo search
- When you import a recipe from a link or a social media post, our server downloads that page or post to read the recipe from it.
- To pull out ingredients and steps, the recipe text, or the photos and screenshots you import, are processed by an AI service provider. It is used only to answer that request.
- When you search for a photo for a meal, the search words (usually the meal's name) are sent to an image search provider, without your name, email or account details.
Shared grocery lists
If you share a grocery list as a link, a copy of that list is stored so anyone with the link can open it. Shared links expire automatically, after 7 days by default and never later than 30 days.
Technical information
Like most online services, our servers record technical information such as request times, errors, IP addresses, and your device and app version, to keep Meals running, secure and free of abuse. App updates are delivered by a service provider that receives the same kind of technical information.
Usage analytics
Meals has a Share Usage Analytics setting in Settings > Privacy. Meals does not currently send usage analytics to our servers. If that changes, analytics will be limited to counts of which features are used and whether actions succeed, never the names of your meals, recipes or groceries, and they will honor that setting. We will update this policy first.
What we don't collect
- Your location
- Your contacts
- Health or fitness data
- Payment information
- Advertising identifiers, or any data used to track you across other companies' apps and websites
How we use your information
Only to provide Meals: running your account, syncing your household, importing recipes, finding photos, answering support requests, and keeping the service secure and working. We don't sell your personal information, share it for cross-context behavioral advertising, or use your content to train AI models.
Who we share it with
- Your household. Members see the meals, plan and grocery list you share there, and your name.
- People you send a share link to. They can see that grocery list until the link expires.
- Service providers. We use a small number of providers for hosting and storage, AI recipe reading, image search and app update delivery. They process information on our behalf to provide those services to us. Our AI provider's terms don't allow it to train its models on the data we send it.
- Apple. Sign in with Apple and TestFlight are provided by Apple under Apple's own privacy policy.
- When required by law, or to protect the rights, safety and security of our users, the public or Meals.
How long we keep it
- Your account and content: while your account is open.
- Shared grocery list links: until they expire, at most 30 days.
- Technical logs: up to 30 days. Error reports we use to fix specific problems may be kept longer.
- Backups: deleted data rolls out of our backups within 30 days.
- Support emails: as long as needed to help you, and to keep records of your request.
Your choices and rights
- See and correct your data in the app at any time, or email us for help.
- Get a copy of your personal information by emailing us.
- Delete your account in Settings > Account > Delete Account, or by emailing us.
- Turn off usage analytics in Settings > Privacy.
Deleting your account deletes your account, revokes your Sign in with Apple connection, and deletes any household that only you belong to, including its meals, plan, grocery list and photos. A household you share with others stays with them, along with the content you added and your name on it. We won't treat you differently for exercising any of these rights.
Do Not Track: Meals doesn't track you across other sites or apps, so it doesn't respond differently to Do Not Track signals.
Security
Information is encrypted in transit between the app and our servers, and access to a household's data is limited to its members. No system is perfectly secure, so we can't guarantee absolute security. If a breach affects your personal information, we'll notify you as required by law.
Children's privacy
You must be at least 13 to use Meals. We don't knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we learn we have, we'll delete it promptly. If you believe a child under 13 is using Meals, please email us.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy. The date at the top always shows the latest version, and we'll tell you in the app before any change that materially affects how we use your information.
